Honey, I shrunk … the apartment!

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

I really enjoy working on personal projects which stretch my creativity. I am currently very excited about a series where I build and photograph dioramas.

What is a diorama you ask? Basically a diorama is scale model but you can click on the word Diorama if you want to know what Wikipedia has to say about it all.

I intend to photograph and shrink full size human subjects and then pop them into my diorama photographs with a little help from Photoshop.

There is a lot to consider, from getting the scale on the furniture and “little” items right to making sure that the light falls correctly on my full size people so they look like they belong in the final picture.

Plus! There is hours of searching on Etsy for dollhouse furniture and other details to get the look just right (not that I’m complaining – I love Etsy!!)

I am in the early stages but I have included a test picture above which I took last weekend. The idea was to see what I could achieve with a basic set up.

Its hard to believe that the image above is actually a photo of the setup below (taken with an Iphone from above). You’ll notice that I’m using a normal household lamp (no fancy schmancy photographic lights) in the photo. I did this because I knew that it would give the room a nice warm glow, which is exactly what I was after.

So, I think you could make something similar, even with a point and shoot camera or smart phone. If you are interested, have a go and post your pictures as a comment on the  Elixir Photography “Honey, I shrunk … the apartment!”  Facebook post.

I would really really love to see what you come up with!
